The G Scale Society is a UK based but global society for those in the hobby of running large scale trains at their home and in the garden.
The G Scale Society was formed in 1987, for those interested in large-scale model railways.
On the 30th of April 2027 the G Scale Society will celebrate the 40th Birthday of its formation.

The G Scale Society produces a quarterly Journal in colour, usually around 72 pages and mailed to the membership.
Local Area Groups.
Over 28 communities covering the UK for members to meet at events – sharing expertise, running trains and making lifelong friends.
North East Area Group (NEAG) of the G Scale Society was created on the 7th of February 2025 covering the North Eastern counties of England.

A meeting took place on 28 July 2024 discuss the future of the Yorkshire Coast Area Group, along with a discussions about the North East & North Yorkshire Area Group.
At that meeting it was thought that both groups would be closing down.
Through on-one’s fault but due to personal and other circumstances, also Covid didn’t help, they were struggling and had become leaderless.
An email was sent to all those with YCAG in their member listing and several members attended what proved to be a lively and very fruitful discussion.
Without realising it the email also contacted several NE&NY members, as they had listed YCAG as one of their groups of interest.
To everyone's surprise, delight and relief there is every possibility that both Area Groups could be reinstated.
There would be changes and some re-organisation (and re-naming) but given the goodwill, involvement and enthusiasm of the members concerned, both these groups would move forward with hope for a bright future.
Hence the changes to YCAG and NE&NY were as follows.
YCAG will be re-named North Yorkshire [NYAG] and this group will be based in York.
It will cover those postcodes in North Yorkshire. This will require further research and possible amendment, as it could encroach on other Area Groups.
NE&NY will lose ‘North Yorkshire’ and become North East [NEAG] and this group will be based in Darlington.
For administration purposes and the allocations of postcodes* NEAG will cover from the North Yorkshire County border to the Scottish border.
This is a very large geographical area, presently managed from a base in Darlington, when/if the Area Group Membership expands beyond a manageable level, it was noted at the time of the formation of NEAG that the group could be subdivided as north/south and the ‘northern portion’ would be allocated a new identity.
NEAG is nestled in the North East based in the railway town of Darlington, to the South of the town, just over bridge crossing the River Tees which is the frontier post for the North Yorkshire Group, to the West and over the Cumbrian Pennines is under the North West Group, to the North past Northumberland and over the border is the Scotland Area Group, to the East, well that’s the North Sea and beyond!
The Area Groups were formed for Members in localised areas to provide facilities to meet up and enhance their enjoyment of their membership.
Under the guidance of the elected representatives of the Main Committee, Area Groups are to be self administered and financially independent.
They are subject to the Society’s Constitution and Rules.
Members of the Society are not obliged to join any Area Group, likewise if they wish to do so, may join and participate in more than one Area Group.
Each Area Group has an Organiser of the Group, or under the auspicious title of AGL (Area Group Leader), which is in essence the go between, to provide Communication and Administrative tasks around the Area Group Membership, and to the Society Membership and elected officials.
We as an Area Group are fortunate to have a permanent home at a peppercorn rent, to meet and play trains, and given the unpredictability of the North East weather it is welcoming to have a warm dry space with more or less unrestricted usage.
By joining the WhatsApp Group and referring to the live online Diary will provide the necessary information to what is occurring when and where.
Usually the Winter Months are confined to indoor meetings, and as the weather improves the outdoor beckons, visiting other members either formally or informally, to drop by for a chat and a cuppa, assist with a task, provide assistance for a project, or just sit and chew the cud and watch the trains go round.
Throughout the year we fly the flag at a number of exhibitions and events, ranging from Model Railway Exhibitions, to The Night at the Hopetown Museum, Breakfast with Santa for ill and poorly children, Christmas Fairs etc, etc. Even to the extent of putting on a display in a ploughed field! Weather permitting!
We are also regular attendees at the Bowburn Toy & Train Fair, Craig often allocates us two 6' tables for a G Scale display and the opportunity of a space for second hand sales where a percentage of sales is allocated to the Area Group Funds.
Plans for the future, constantly being updated, watch this space as they say, well WhatsApp and the monthly newsletter are the preferred methods of keeping in touch.
