Picked up from Northumberland Gazette
Beith to open schools debate at Westminster
Sir Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick upon Tweed constituency.
Published Date: 20 July 2009
LIBERAL Democrat MP Sir Alan Beith is to open a debate on schools in Alnwick tomorrow (Tuesday).
The MP for Berwick upon Tweed has secured the debate at 1pm tomorrow in Westminster Hall.
It will focus on the continuing problems with the buildings at the Duchess's Community High School in Alnwick and the delay to plans for a new three-19-year-olds learning campus caused by the economic situation. _________________ Lynn Roxburgh |

Such a sad situation that Alnwick has been left in limbo while Cramlington, Blyth and Ashington - all of who could have waited - were put to the front of the queue for political reasons.
Good luck with trying to get something off the ground.

Interesting that they say it is important to give more to high cost areas - that would indicate additional funding for rural schools but that doesn't appear to happen. _________________ Ed Brown

Coun Reid said it was their top priority.
It should have always been the top priority, the money was thrown at areas which had far better facilities and good results. Perhaps the Labour minister would have liked to explain why that was done which would have been a case of Putting the Learner First

Yet another attempt by Sir Alan Beith to get Duchess High School funding
http://www.theyworkforyou.com/debates/?id=2010-01-25a.546.0&s=speaker%3A10034#g551.5Alan
"Alan Beith (Berwick-upon-Tweed, Liberal Democrat)
Does the Schools Minister, following his visit to The Duchess's community high school in Alnwick, agree that it desperately needs replacing? Will the subsequent visit arranged by his officials clear some of barriers to getting that done?
Vernon Coaker (Minister of State (Schools and Learners), Department for Children, Schools and Families; Gedling, Labour)
As the right hon. Gentleman knows, I visited Alnwick recently and looked at the school. It clearly needs to be rebuilt as soon as possible. I hope that the subsequent visit by officials, which has taken place, will help with that process."
Is this a promise? _________________ Lynn Roxburgh |

The Liberal Democrats in Northumberland have welcomed an announcement by Nick Clegg that Liberal Democrats in government will provide an additional £15 million for schools in the county.

| It perhaps doesn't address the Alnwick High buildings problem as it equates to only half of a high school rebuild. It also looks as if the Lib Dems see it as an increase in general funding quoting reduced class sizes and increased support. |

Does anyone know more behind the headlines in this week's Gazette?
Would £26m do the job?
Giant leap forward for new school
Published Date:
04 March 2010
By Robert Brooks
A NEW high school for Alnwick is closer than ever, it has emerged, after county council chiefs were invited to submit a bid to Government for £26million in exceptional funding.
The Gazette has learned that a full and damning dossier outlining the deteriorating state of the Duchess's Community High School was signed off on Monday and sent to the Department for Children, Schools and Families for consideration. _________________ Lynn Roxburgh |

Presumably this is to build a Secondary School and not ahigh school as the county policy is for 2 tier education and to rebuild a high school would not be in line with their stated policy. _________________ Ed Brown

| It has to be yet more election posturing. Call me cynical if you like but I can't see it happening any sooner. |
