Post April 19th Statement from NEAG
As expected the Council Vote today was
carried in favour of moving the PLF process forwards. The
difference this time was that the opposition parties voted
against. The vote was recorded, and so the voters of the
county now have a clear view of the views of the existing
councilors on the subject of 2tier/3tier.
As the process moves forward, NEAG will
continue to support all the local action groups in the
county, and most particularly in those areas first for
the second stage of consultation, a process which remarkably
had already started before the vote.
The voters of the county will no doubt
take this decision into account when considering placing
their votes in the coming elections.
The Council's consultation exercise showed
that only 22% of the population supported the moves to
change to a 2-tier system of education in Northumberland.
The County Council elections showed that this was an accurate
assessment as the Labour party scraped a small majority
in many seats and were voted for by approximately 20% of
the voters in Northumberland. There continues to be widespread
dissatisfaction with the way education is handled and NEAG
continues to press the Council to examine viable innovative
ideas instead of scrapping the the existing successful
system of education.
